Short Biography


KEVIN WILLIAMS is founder and director of the out-of-home leisure entertainment consultancy KWP Ltd. he has amassed a unique experience of the past and present of the industries that are defining themselves as key to the DOE arena - after leaving school, he has worked with leaders in amusement, commercial and military simulation, virtual reality, theme parks, game software and CGi technology. Possessing an incredible background of working on both sides of the business table as developer, manufacturer and originator - he is one of the unique group of past Walt Disney Imagineers. A well-known commentator in the trade media including InterGame, Replay Magazine, Vending Times and Arcade Heroes, he also publishes his own provocative news service and is a veteran moderator and presenter on the aspects that drive this market and related markets - his is also co-author of the leading publication on this sector (The Out-of-Home Entertainment Frontier). From his position in the digital out-of-home entertainment sector, he has championed the non-traditional opportunities this sector affords.

1. What current technologies and tools fulfill your needs in your practice?


Proprietary development technologies, High end desktop PCs, Unreal 4 engine & Unity, Liquid VR, Arcade cabinets and simulators


2. What technologies do you see emerging in the next 5-10 years?


Virtual Reality Roller Coasters, Hand held interface devices, New Head mounted displays, motion detection hardware and software, 3D projection mapping, intelligent robotic devices, mobile geotagged devices


3. Could you identify any strengths and weaknesses with these technologies?


Limitations in devices like Occulus Rift, Need robust and hygienic devices for mass public use out of home. Devices need to be adaptable for all ages


FUTURE INTERESTS:


4. Do you think there are additional technologies or tools needed, or that you would wish for?


More and better interface devices, higher speed and robust data networking, better and more realistic content, multi-sensory technologies (taste, smell, touch), inclusive social networking technologies

 

5. If these were available what would you be creating?


Immersive games with multi players located anywhere in the world with digital and physical effects


6. Can you see any strengths and weakness involved?


Developments based on military technologies which are repurposed for civilian use (swords into ploughshares)


7. What do you recommend to fill the gap between creators and technology providers?


New skills are needed which combine creative and technology capabilities
